The battle of midway ended with the sinking of four main Japanese aircraft carriers. The U.S. won the battle and lost only one carrier, the USS Yorktown. Hundreds of naval aviators on both sides were killed.

Why was the Battle of Midway important to the US?

first answer: The battle of midway was important to the US because the US destroyed the Japanese Imperial Navy. This gave the USA complete control of the Pacific Ocean. second correct answer: The Battle of Midway resulted in the loss of four Japanese Fleet Aircraft Carriers & most of their aircrews, while the US lost one Fleet Aircraft Carrier. Both sides also lost a few other smaller ships. These losses forced the Japanese to turn-back their invasion forces targeting the Midway atoll held by the US. These losses were especially significant because it also permanently ended the Japanese offensive threat in the Central Pacific against Midway & Pearl Harbor, thereby freeing up US naval & air forces to concentrate initially on defeating the Japanese thrusts in New Guinea at Port Moresby, and in the Solomon Islands at Guadalcanal. This is often been called the Battle that turned the "Tide of War" against Japan. Essentially, Japan lost the ability to win the war through offensive action against the United States.

What naval battle was fought entirely by air in World War 2?

The first major naval battle where the opposing sides used aircraft was the Battle of Midway between the United States and Japan. Battle of Midway, decisive naval engagement of World War II, which gave the United States sea power over the Japanese. It was fought in June 1942 near the Midway Islands by Japanese and U.S. aircraft carriers. In early June, American naval reconnaissance planes observed, at a distance of 966 km (600 mi) a Japanese armada of some 185 ships advancing on the Midway Islands. On June 4 American fighters and bombers, sent from Midway airfields, and three aircraft carriers attacked the Japanese fleet. At the same time Japanese carrier-based planes attacked aircraft installations on Midway in preparation for an invasion; damage, however, was not sufficient to prevent the American planes from refueling and taking off again. During the ensuing battle between the American and Japanese naval forces, the two fleets neither saw each other nor exchanged gunfire; all contact was made by Japanese carrier-based planes and American land- and carrier-based planes. By the night of June 6, when contact by aircraft between the two fleets was lost, the defeat of the Japanese was accomplished. Losses for the Japanese combatants included four aircraft carriers, two cruisers, and three destroyers; those for the Americans were the aircraft carrier Yorktown and one destroyer. The victory at Midway terminated a major Japanese attempt to capture the islands as a possible prelude to an invasion of Hawaii. The success of the operation, only a month after the important but indecisive Battle of the Coral Sea, effectively tipped the balance of sea power in the Pacific Ocean in favor of the United States.

How did the Battle of Midway impact Americans in the Pacific front?

Midway was a pivotal battle which degraded the Japanese carrier force greatly. By the opening stages of the pacific war it was realized that carriers were the key to victory by both sides. The destruction of the four Japanese carriers at midway were not the only damages inflicted. The carriers aircraft handlers as well as a large percentage of their well trained pilots were lost as well. (not to mention their bet naval commander with regards to aurcraft carrier operations) from this point on Japan has a hard time assembling a formidable carrier fleet. It was a huge victory for the united states. Even had midway been a victory for the Japanese chances are with US industry we would have still won in the end, however the war would have been prolonged with many more deaths on the US side.

Was the battle of midway the first time the US naval forces were equal in strength to the Japanese?

No. At the start of the Battle of Midway (June 1942), the Imperial Japanese Naval forces engaged in the Midway Operation outnumbered the US Naval forces protecting Midway in both aircraft carriers & surface combat ships. During the battle, the Japanese lost all four fleet aircraft carriers (with aircraft, pilots & crews) and only a few surface combat ships. The US lost one fleet aircraft carrier (out of three engaged) & one destroyer with most aircraft, pilots & crew saved. This was the first major battle where the Japanese losses were much greater than the US losses. Although the Japanese still had a much grater number of surface combat ships than the US Navy in the Midway area, the Japanese decided to withdraw & cancel the invasion of Midway. Actually the first time that US & Japanese forces were roughly equal in strength (in a particular combat zone) was during the Campaign for Guadalcanal that lasted several months from August 1942 into early 1943. During the campaign, losses (on land, air & sea) were heavy on both sides with the Japanese being the most adversely affected. Overall, the US Navy was superior in the numbers of naval combat forces over the Japanese throughout the entire war. Because of the US Navy's heavy commitment of forces to fight Germany, Italy, & Vichy France in the Atlantic & Mediterranean, it was not possible to shift the full weight of the US Navy against the Japanese in the Pacific, until after the two invasions of France in the summer of 1944. Thereafter the quantity of US Navy forces in the Pacific grew rapidly, far out numbering the Japanese naval units in almost all operations. The US shipyards also built many more ships every month of all types than the Japanese were building in a year. By the end of the war, the US Navy was the largest, most skilled, best organized, best supported, and most powerful navy ever built, even greatly surpassing the British Royal Navy.

Both sides used all aluminum (all metal) mono-planes during the sea battle. Only Great Britain continued to use obsolete WWI style Bi-Planes for it's naval use; until later in the war.

Can I replace only one side of the car carrier?

Yes, you can repair only one side of your car carrier. However, for the best results you should repair both sides. You should make sure that both sides are even, and that both sides can hold the same amount of weight.
