It wasn't exactly a unification. It was more like a thought out act of dominance. Kamehameha set out to kill other ali'i (including his own cousin who helped him gain power over smaller ali'i), in order to rule over all the islands. I doubt anyone alive at the time would have called it 'unification'. The main other ali'i that Kamehameha fought against was Ka'ahumanu (also known as the 'Ahumanu) which was technically a family who ruled over a few islands and were the 'power house' of Hawaiian royalty at the time. The King of the 'Ahumanu however was Kahekili Nui 'Ahumanu, aka King Kahekili.
