1. The federal government of the United States did not have the right to impose an anti-slavery law. Whether a state wanted to allow or disallow slavery should be decided by the state - not the federal government.
2. The states had created the union by voluntarily agreeing to join and create the United States. The states could just as easily nullify their agreement.
3. The imposition of tariffs on goods imported from England were aimed at protecting Northern manufacturers.
No they do not. We are a united nation.

Because of the innate soverignty of states, each one has the right to disagree with the central government and secede if it so votes.
It should have a right because its it own state
Lincoln committed himself to reuniting the union at any cost. Although he was elected on the anti-slavery Republican ticket, Lincoln's main reason for going to war was not to stop slavery, but to restore the union. He didn't believe the southerners even had the legal right to secede.
===================== Point 7: Right of Secession There should be right to secede from the Federation. ====================== We should take a positive view of the "right to secede" initiative, which is worth considering despite its affirmation in Point 7 which speaks of the Sabahan and Sarawakian rights to secede from the Federation of Malaysia This is so because "the use [by Point 7] of the word ''should' (as opposed to the word 'shall,' for example) turns the option of "RIGHT TO SECEDE" into a mere recommendation." In short, if we take consideration of the above arguments on the reading of POINT 7, the FEDERATION OF MALAYSIA should politely been told.
Southerners called for secession from the union.

The southern states certainly believed they had the right to secede, but most of the northern states disagreed. The question was answered by a sort of trial-by-combat called the American civil War.Because the Confederacy lost the war and the Union was preserved, it turned out that no state had the right to secede without Congressional approval.
There was no official way that a state could secede, so the question was tested by the Civil War. That war determined that a state could not secede. There is a possible exception to this, as many people believe the Constitution of the State of Vermont retains the right for that state to secede.
