The main problems faced by the Anzacs in Gallipoli were sickness and disease. Because of inadequate sanitation, unburied bodies and swarms of flies, many soldiers came down with dysentery and typhoid. A shortage of food and water was also prevalent at that time.

About an equal number of troops of the Ottoman Empire. The bad part of that is that the Turks held the high ground, had home field advantage and for an amphibious assault to be sucessfull, the attacking force needs to have a four or five to one numerical advantage.

There are numerous problems the Anzacs faced.

1. They landed in the wrong place. Their advances were planned for a flat stretch of land, but the strong currents of the Aegean sea dragged them a mile too far north and the Anzacs landed in a tiny cove ringed by tall cliffs and mountains.

2. The terrain. As I mentioned before, the area where they were was ringed by massive cliffs, sheer drops and narrow ridges. The place was also full of thorny bushes and stunted trees which, at best, were impenetrable.

3. Food/water. There was never enough water for the soldiers to drink, let alone to bathe in. Some rationed it so that they could bathe different parts of their bodies on different days. Others used it only for drinking and cooking, and took their chances swimming in the sea among the shrapnel and ships. The food was terrible (they ate bully beef in cans, reduced to soup by the heat, Ticklers jam and hard tack, biscuits, which were so tough they often shattered teeth).

4. The enemy. The Turks had all the high ground, from which they could rain down a murderous fire. Often times they would roll grenades down the hill, not even needing to throw them. They were easily able to spy on the troop movements and direct their big guns on the other side of the hills to fire upon the beach. The Anzacs were flirting with suicide every time they showed their head during daylight. Particularly because the Turks had some great snipers.

5. Isolation. They were separated from the British troops at Suvla Bay and Cape Helles. They only way they had to leave was on the ships. The only supplies they could get in came from the sea.

I believe terrain, poor intelligence and the failing of British high command dogged the Australians, but the hardships endured by troops were many, disease, poor water, lack of rations, harsh environment (hanging to cliffs or the muck of trenches). I recommend watching Aussie documentaries or watch the movie t.v series The Anzacs, or the movie Gallipoli. Heaps of info out there mate, they were legends, we should all remember them.
