The court-martial against Union General Fitz John Porter was convened on December 3, 1862. Porter was charged with disobeying orders and misbehavior with regards to the enemy if the Second Battle of Bull Run.

Union General Fritz John Porter graduated from West Point in 1845. He ranked eighth in a graduating class of forty one cadets. Porter saw action in the Peninsula campaign and the Second Battle of Bull Run.
General Robert E. Lee was the Confederate general who proposed a guerrilla war against the Union. Since the Union declared war over the Confederacy, the Confederacy had one major goal: defense. The Confederacy would fight defensively against the Union and if the opportunity arises, to invade. Robert Lee was very successful during his invasions of the Union.
Union General John Porter Hatch was a West Point graduate in 1845. Among the 41 graduating cadets that year, Hatch was ranked 17th. Hatch saw war duty in the Eastern Theater. He served for example in the Peninsula campaign.
Throughout the US Civil War, defensive operations often won the day at any particular battle. The capable Union Major General Fitz-John Porter held the defensive advantage. His army of 30,000 troops were entrenched against the anticipated attack General Lee. In addition, Fitz-John Porter was supported by 17 artillery batteries. For its time, the ensuing battle was the most intense so far in the war. What saved the day for General lee was the reinforcements provided by general Stone wall Jackson. Jackson arrived late but ordered his forces to sweep the field with gunfire and fixed bayonets. Confederate forces broke through the Union lines and General McClellan used the cover of Federal gunboats to plan a retreat back to Harrison's Landing.
The Union Generals at the Siege of Vicksburg were Ulysses S. Grant and David D. Porter, while the Confederate general was John C. Pemberton.

Porter served under John Pope at the Second Battle of Bull Run and under George B. McClellan at the Battle of Antietam. He commanded the V Corps at Antietam and the V Corps at the Second Bull Run.
