Union General Fritz John Porter graduated from West Point in 1845. He ranked eighth in a graduating class of forty one cadets. Porter saw action in the Peninsula campaign and the Second Battle of Bull Run.
Union General John Porter Hatch was a West Point graduate in 1845. Among the 41 graduating cadets that year, Hatch was ranked 17th. Hatch saw war duty in the Eastern Theater. He served for example in the Peninsula campaign.

As an aside, he graduated in the same class as Confederate General Albert Sidney Johnston. Casey saw much action during the Peninsula campaign. He was also on the board that of inquiry where Union General Porter was convicted of cowardice at the Second Battle of Bull Run.
Union General Benjamin Butler did not graduate from West Point. He did have a college education and graduated from Colby College in Maine. He also passed the bar in Massachusetts and practiced law before the US Civil War.
Union General James Birdseye McPherson graduated from the West Point in 1853. He was ranked first in his class of 52 graduates.
Union Major General William T. Sherman graduated from West Point in 1840. Sherman ranked 6th in his class.
General Philip Henry Sheridan graduated from West Point in 1853. He ranked 34th out of a class of 52.
Union General Issac Ingalls Stevens graduated from West Point in 1839. Among the graduating class of 31, General Stevens ranked first. General Stevens was killed at the Battle of Chantilly in 1862.
Union General Jacob Ammen graduated from West Point in 1831. He ranked 12th in his graduating class of 33 cadets. General Ammen was most active in military operations in the Western Theater.
General Ulysses S. Grant
Union General Alfred Sully graduated from West Point in 1841. He was ranked 34th in his graduating class of 52 cadets. Sully is best known for his participation in the Peninsula campaign.
Union General Amiel Weeks Whipple graduated from West Point in 1841. He was ranked fifth among his graduating class of cadets numbering 52. General Weeks was mortally wounded at the Battle of Chancellorsville in 1863.
