Union General James Birdseye McPherson graduated from the West Point in 1853. He was ranked first in his class of 52 graduates.
James Longstreet held the rank of major general in the Confederate army. He graduated 54th in the West Point class of 1842.
Union General James Patrick Forsyth graduated from West Point in 1856. Among the 49 graduating cadets, Forsyth ranked 28th. Forsyth served in the 1862 Peninsula campaign and at the Battle of Antietam.
Union General John James Peck graduated from West point in 1843. He ranked eighth among the 39 cadets that graduated that year. Peck served in the Eastern Theater and faced Confederate General Longstreet in the Battles of Suffolk in Virginia. These were inconclusive battles.
Confederate General James Heyward Trapier graduated from West Point in 1838. Among the 45 graduating cadets, Trapier was ranked third. This was one place below PT Beauregard. Most of Heyward's battles were in the Western Theater.
Confederate General Edmund Kirby Smith was a graduate of West Point's class of 1845. He ranked 26th in his class.
Major General James B. McPherson was an outstanding officer and graduated first in his West Point class of 1853. McPherson lost his life in the battles surrounding Atlanta in July of 1864. In the course of some of the North-South battling, he had rode to an area of fierce fighting and was intercepted by Confederate skirmishers. Reportedly he was asked to surrender, but instead politely tipped his hat and rode away from the Confederate lines. During this he was shot as he rode and a bullet struck him in the heart. His horse headed back to Union lines with the wounded general still mounted, but he was dead. He was only 35 years old and was engaged to be married after Atlanta was captured.US Grant and many other officers took his death badly. General McPherson was designated to replace General Sherman should Sherman fall in battle.
Confederate General James Morrison Hawes graduated from West point in 1845. Hawes was ranked 29th in his graduating class of 41 cadets. Most of Hawes operations took place in the Western Theater. He, or example served at Shiloh and Vicksburg.

Union General James Barnet Fry graduated from West Point in 1847. He was ranked 14th in his graduating class of 38 cadets. Fry served in the Western Theater of the US Civil War. He participated in the important Battle of Shiloh, the siege of Corinth and the Battle of Perryville.
Union General James Harrison Wilson graduated from West Point in 1860. Among the 41 graduating cadets, Wilson ranked sixth. Wilson took part in many battles, in both the Eastern and Western theaters. His last victory was on April 2, 1865 when he captured Selma, Alabama.
According to An Adjutant General Remembers: a Military Memoir by Major General Kenneth Wickham, he graduated from West Point on 12 June 1938.
Union General James Meech Warner graduated from West Point in 1860. He was ranked 40th among his graduating class of 41 cadets. Warner spent most of the war as a topographer for the Army of the Potomac. He was present at the battles of South Mountain and Antietam. Later in the war he commanded troops in the Overland campaign of 1864.
