Union General James Birdseye McPherson graduated from the West Point in 1853. He was ranked first in his class of 52 graduates.
Union General James Patrick Forsyth graduated from West Point in 1856. Among the 49 graduating cadets, Forsyth ranked 28th. Forsyth served in the 1862 Peninsula campaign and at the Battle of Antietam.
Union General James Barnet Fry graduated from West Point in 1847. He was ranked 14th in his graduating class of 38 cadets. Fry served in the Western Theater of the US Civil War. He participated in the important Battle of Shiloh, the siege of Corinth and the Battle of Perryville.
Union General Benjamin Butler did not graduate from West Point. He did have a college education and graduated from Colby College in Maine. He also passed the bar in Massachusetts and practiced law before the US Civil War.
Union General James Harrison Wilson graduated from West Point in 1860. Among the 41 graduating cadets, Wilson ranked sixth. Wilson took part in many battles, in both the Eastern and Western theaters. His last victory was on April 2, 1865 when he captured Selma, Alabama.
Union Major General William T. Sherman graduated from West Point in 1840. Sherman ranked 6th in his class.
Union General James Meech Warner graduated from West Point in 1860. He was ranked 40th among his graduating class of 41 cadets. Warner spent most of the war as a topographer for the Army of the Potomac. He was present at the battles of South Mountain and Antietam. Later in the war he commanded troops in the Overland campaign of 1864.
General Philip Henry Sheridan graduated from West Point in 1853. He ranked 34th out of a class of 52.
Union General James St. Clair Morton graduated from West Point in 1851. He was ranked second among his graduating class of cadets that numbered 42. Morton was initially sent to aid the Union's efforts in the Western Theater of the US Civil War. He served there in the battles of Stone's River and Chickamauga. Later he was transferred to Virginia and participated in the Siege of Petersburg.
Union General Issac Ingalls Stevens graduated from West Point in 1839. Among the graduating class of 31, General Stevens ranked first. General Stevens was killed at the Battle of Chantilly in 1862.
Union General Jacob Ammen graduated from West Point in 1831. He ranked 12th in his graduating class of 33 cadets. General Ammen was most active in military operations in the Western Theater.
