V-E Day, or Victory in Europe day, was established as May 8, 1945. The German High Command, represented by President (Admiral) Karl Donitz, announced the surrender of German forces on May 7. Adolf Hitler had committed suicide in Berlin on April 30.
V-J DAY, or Victory over Japan day, was established on the day of surrender, which was August 14, 1945 (August 15 in Japan). It is also known as V-P, Victory in the Pacific Day. The formal ceremony of Japanese surrender came on September 2, 1945.
