The Franks came to rule most of continental Western Europe (except Portugal, most of Spain and Scandinavia) with the Carolingian Empire which was established by Charlemagne.

Charlemagne was crowned emperor by the pope and he was seen as the emperor of (Roman Catholic) Christendom, creating a notion of a (western) European Christendom which helped to shape a notion of western European identity. This sense of (western) European identity was revived in the 20th century. Charlemagne also invaded what is now northern Germany, which was pagan and Christianising it.

Charlemagne also presided over a period of cultural revival which has been called the Carolingian renaissance. He promoted learning, which at the time meant Roman learning, even though the Roman were looked down on as pagans. He also encouraged abbots and monks to transcribe Roman texts into new manuscripts. Subsequently, they were forgotten. During the Renaissance, many of these were rediscovered by scholars who looked for them in the libraries of the abbeys and monasteries. This greatly contributed to the renaissance, which was a rediscovery of the Roman art, architecture, literature and learning. The Renaissance had a great impact of European culture and its subsequent development and established the influence Roman culture on the education of the European elites and the influence of Roman Civil Law. Much of this would have not been possible without the manuscripts from Charlemagne's age.

After Charlemagne's death, the Carolingian empire descended into continuous war. This was because at the death of an emperor, following Germanic traditions, the empire was divided among his sons. This led to wars between the siblings plus other close relatives over slices of the empire. This continuous warfare, instability and lack of central power, led to the development of feudalism, a socio-political system that was to be the feature of Europe through the rest of the Middle Ages.

What statements best describe how Clovis laid the groundwork for the Carolingian's empire?

Clovis was the king of a major branch of the Franks, the Salian Franks. At the time the Franks were divided into several kingdoms. Clovis had a Frankish king, Chararic, executed and killed another one, Ragnachar. He conquered all the Frankish territories except for that of another major branch, the Ripuarian Franks of central Germany. He then conquered Cologne and became the king of all Franks. Therefore, he united all the Franks under his rule. He then conquered the remaining Roman territory in Gaul and pushed the Visigoths out of south-western Gaul. Therefore, he gained control of most of Gaul, except from Brittany, Provence, and Brittany, establishing the franks as the most powerful people in Western Europe. Clovis died in 511, that is, 289 year before the creation of the Carolingian Empire and was a king of a different dynasty, the Merovingians. The Carolingian Empire was created by the Carolingian dynasty.

Why was the Christian conversion of the Frankish king Clovis important?

The Christian conversion of the Franks is considered to be one of the most significant events in European and Western history. For eventually it would lead to an alliance of convenience between the Franks and the papacy for this was a political advantage not open to his Arian enemies.
