the overarching difference is that the US Constitution delegates the majority of the power to a central government, whereas the Confederacy believed firmly in states' rights and thus gave states the majority of the power

∙ 6y agoFor the most part the Southerners wanted to have a constitution that was close to the US Constitution. Several differences, however, stand out. The Confederate Constitution limited the term of its president to one six year term. No reelection process was involved. Also the Confederate Constitution made slavery legal and to clarify the issue of secession, no state joining the Confederacy was allowed to secede.

They both had a form of federal government, even though there was more "state power" in the Confederate States, as noted in the Confederate preamble. The Confederate document was basically a copy of the US Constitution, except for some pointed changes: the term of the president was 6 years, bills in Congress were restricted from having non-germane amendments, and (pointedly) industry could not be supported by tariffs.
