After this, visitors proceeded to a series of rooms. The Apodyterium was a room where visitors undressed. The frigidarium was a room with a cold-plunge bath. The tepidarium was a room heated with warm air of to prepare for the hot bath.The caldarium was heated with hot air and had a pool with hot water and a basin with cold water which was poured over the head before leaving the room. The laconicum, was like a sauna. It was sweating-room with no pool.
Because people undressed, there was an area reserved for women.
The baths also often had a palaestra, (outdoor gym) for ball games and exercise for men, libraries, rooms for poetry readings, and food outlets.
