A start can be found here: wingsofliberation.nl listing, amongst others, the units making up the 1st British Airbone division at the time of Arnhem. regiments.org Will give an overview of British names and terms. I think that the British Army generally base their formations on the # 3. There would be, 3 squads to a section. 3 sections to a platoon. 3 platoons to a company. 3 companies to a battalion. 3 batt. to a regiment. 3 regt. to a brigade. 3 brigd. to a divison. 3 div. to a corps. 3 corps to an army group. 3 groups to an Army. There is always in addition to each formation within a regt. a support unit, and from company level up, H.Q. Unit plus specialties like "motar platoon", "reconnaissance platoon" etc. There is also in the Div. a Field Ambulance, M.T., Artillery, signals, engineers, intel, supply(stores), etc. This can be adjusted to suit the requirement with additional batts. added to a regt.such as the Parachute Regt. having 18 batts during W.W.2 plus a Brigd. of Gurkha and Indian para's in the Indian Army, and 6th Airborne Div included 1st Canadian Para Batt. The British Divisions in W.W.2 also included 1 Brigd. of Glider-borne Troops consisting of 4 batts. Everyone involved were classed as Airborne because they all arrived on the battlefield "borne on the air", and all fought side by side surrounded by the enemy. Hope this helps as a general guide. Re-reading my previous response, I need to add a correction - should read 3- armies to an army group. (Got it the wrong way around, my apologies !! Fred.

What was H-Hour?

H-hour was the name given to the airborne assault in the Battle of Normandy. It included the American 101st Airborne Division and 82nd Airborne Division With the British 6th Airborne Division. This took place about three hours before the main beach landings on the Normandy. The Airborne invasion consisted of over 50,000 men and around 1,200 planes and gliders. The combined assault of British and American Airborne and glider divisions would surprise the German defenders and cause enough havoc to make the beach landings go more smoothly.

What German divisions fought at the battle of the bulge?

The German attack fell mostly on the US First Army. The US Ninth Army was north of the First, and the British were north of the Ninth Army. Because the German breakthrough appeared as though it were going to reach a small Belgian town through which the landlines strung by Signal Corps troops for telephone communications ran, Eisenhower made the decision to place the troops north of the German breakthrough temporarily under the command of the 21st Army Group, commanded by Montgomery, until the troops north and south could cut through the Bulge and reunite - about eight or nine days. This put Montgomery over US troops, and after the battle was stabilized he made some outlandish claims trying to seize credit for having to "rescue" the incompetent Americans. This was par for the course for Montgomery, yet another of his "what a good boy am I" pronouncements, and came very near to causing his relief by Eisenhower. British newspapers took their cue from Montgomery's overstatements and presently Churchill was obliged to remind the House of Commons that "The Americans have engaged thirty or forty men for every one we have engaged, and have lost sixty to eighty men to every one of ours."The primary role of British troops was in guarding the crossings of the Meuse River, the initial German objective, which freed American troops from that duty to join the battle. The British troops involved were from the XXX Corps, which included the 6th Airborne Division, the 51st (Highland) Division, the 53rd (Welsh) Infantry Division, the 29th Armoured Brigade and the 33rd Armoured Brigade. The Corps reserve was the Guards Armoured Division, the 50th (Northumbrian) Infantry Division, and the 43rd (Wessex) Infantry Division !

This was an airborne operation in Holland in 1944 designed to end the war by Christmas?

"A Bridge Too Far", the airborne attack on the city and bridge at Arnhem. It was a misguided attack, one that Supreme Commander Eisenhower gave into British Field Marshall Montgomery's grandiose plan. It was the last airborne assault in WWII. "Operation Market Garden" was the formal name of the military operation. It was a joint British and American airborne and ground forces assault on Arnhem and all of the bridges all along a single road the British lines to Arnhem. The word 'Market' referred to the airborne part of the operation. This included the United States' 82nd and 101st Airborne Divisions and the British 6th Airborne Division. The word 'Garden' referred to the ground forces, which was the British XXX Corps. "A Bridge Too Far" is the name of the book about the assault by Cornelius Ryan and of the movie.
