Jews at first hardly noticed anything other than that they were forced to wear the yellow six-pointed star with the word "Jude" (Germany), "Jood" (the Netherlands) or another word meaning Jew in the local language.

In the beginning, their freedom was hardly impeded. Later on, however, things worsened. Jews were no longer allowed in a steadily growing list of locations, such as markets, cinemas, parks, and other social areas. Then, the situation turned sour, and the things we all know about started happening.

For instance, the Jews were rounded up to be taken to Auschwitz and other camps, under the impression they were taken there to work for Germany while in reality they were being led to their death.
