1) Tithe- Tax to be paid to the church.
2) Taille- Tax to be paid to the state.
The population of France rose from about 23 million in 1715 to 28 million in 1789. This led to a rapid increase in the demand for grains.Taxes were also levied on articles of everyday consumption like salt or tobacco.Production of grains could not keep pace with the growing population.So, the price of bread which was a staple diet of the majority grew.So, the gap between the rich and the poor widened.Things became worse whenever a drought or hail reduced the harvest.This led to a subsistence crisis.
