III. Development of Topic A. Political Aspects 1. Rationing was used by the government to insure everyone got enough of the raw materials. a. Americans would receive coupon books from the government that rationed sugar, meat, coffee, typewriters, fuel, oil, rubber, and automobiles. They were assigned a price and point value. Families were not restricted to how much of an item they could buy, but were only aloud to buy them until they used all of their coupons. b. People were given points, 16 to 20. The government used these points to ration canned meat, fish, and vegetables. After a while they also rationed condensed milk, breakfast cereals, biscuits and corn flakes. c. The government set up registration area?s so that people could register and buy gas. They could only purchase a certain amount of gas on certain days. d. Even three years after the war the government was still rationing bacon, ham, cheese, butter, cooking fats, meat, sugar, tea, chocolate, eggs, liquid milk, preserves and point rationed foods. B. Economic aspects 1. Food rationing was a major economic impact because the goods and services were upset when people began to resort to other products. a. People could buy one egg every two months. b. Fruits like bananas were imported so they stopped selling them. c. Bakers stopped making iced cakes. d. . People were aloud certain amounts of certain foods a week, a head of meat a week, 4-8 ounces of bacon a week, 2-4 ounce of tea, 1-8 ounces of cheese, and 8 ounces of sugar a week. e. In the 1940?s there was no such thing as a super market, so people had to go to individual shops. f. Sausages were rationed in 1943, and were in short supply. g. Bacon was also rationed and people could only by a certain amount each week. h. Eggs were hard to come by so most people started using powdered eggs. i. You couldn?t buy pre-made apple pie; people would go to shops in the fall and buy cooking apples. j. Pizza was in existed and people ate cheese on toast, cheese was later rationed however. k. Few shops had freezers and almost no homes did so people didn?t have ice-cream. l. Milk was rationed. m. You couldn?t get potato chips pre-packed or frozen, people bought potatoes and made their own. n. Potatoes were NOT rationed. o. Bananas had to be shipped over sea?s so most people ate raspberries. p. Vegetable burgers were in existent. But carrots were not rationed. q. Tinned foods like beans were rationed. r. White bread became a luxury because it was in short supply. s. Brown bread was not rationed. t. Marmite was available in the 1940?s. C. Social Aspects 1. Home styles changed and impacted the standard of living of the people in Maryland. a. There was no central heating in bedrooms so people used fire places; if you had a warm home it you would have to do a lot of preparing, lighting, and cleaning. b. People would put up block out curtains in order to keep the light in so that the enemy did not see them and bomb their house. c. All lights back then were powered by gas, and every light would have to be lit with a match. d. If you had a bathroom in your house you were very lucky, most people had to wash in their bedrooms. There was a jug and basin for washing hands and face in the morning. e. Few people had a washing machine so close had to be hand washed, the washing board made this easier. f. The mangle was a piece of equipment where wet clothes were squeezed to get most of the water out. g. Anderson Shelter -Curved steel panels were joined to make a roof and side walls. -The entrance was covered by a blanket. -A bench served as a bed and seat, most shelters had two. h. People kept a candle in ach room. i. The television was invented but they were expensive so people would normally read books. j. Letters were very important to everyone who wanted to know if their family was safe. k. People had stir up pumps in order to put out fires from ?incendiary bombs?. l. Since most people didn?t have television sets people got their news from the radio. m. The cooker or ?stove? was heated by a coal or wood fire; it was used for cooking and heating the kitchen. n. Irons were actually made out of iron and were used to press clothes. o. A gas cooker in 1940 was very modern. p. People put tape on windows so that they wouldn?t shatter into a thousand pieces if a bomb came. 2. Children?s affects a. Children were evacuated to the country. b. It was very exciting and scary to be evacuated and moved. c. Children did not go with their mothers and had no idea who they were going to live with. d. Small children were sent out into the streets to collect scarp metal. Children would also collect waste paper and bring it into school. Some schools gave out pins for whoever collected the most each week. e. Children?s interest began to change and they started to play shooting games. f. Children became amateur experts on guns and planes, most could tell a B-17 bomber from a B-24 fighter and a mustang from a thunderbolt. g. The media around children changed and superman started fighting spies. h. Captain Marvel matched wits with an evil genius and German spy. 3. The war had an affect on people?s fashions. 1. America was least affected out of the world, but some changes were made. a. People had a hard time buying tennis shoes because of the rubber in them. b. Women?s skirts were shortened to save material. (This is my research topic, and I thought you might like to know.)
