1- Drive trains- Initially just leather belts tying the engine to the rear wheels under tension from a big hand-operated lever. The were inefficient, dangerous, and extremely unreliable.

2- Lubrication- early cars were very prone to bearing failures and overheating.

3- Social reactions- "too much" speed and noise/fumes for a society accustomed to a quiet and slow life.
