Roman Catholic AnswerAt its most basic, there is only one - The Christian faithful. But that one can be divided into two, 1) the Ecclesial ministry (the clergy) and the 2) Laypeople (the Faithful. Both of these groups contribute to the Religious vocation, we have both religious priests (monks, friars, and other religious who are ordained as Bishops, Priests, and Deacons) and the Laypeople who contribute people to be ordained to the priesthood, and others who continue as religious laypeople - nuns, sisters, and brothers.

The Ecclesial ministry can be divided into Bishops, Priests, Deacons, and the minor Orders (Acolyte and Reader). We should probably stop there as you now have five: Bishop, Priest, Deacon, Minor Orders, Lay people. Someone else might divide it as Pope, Bishops, Priests, Deacons, and laypeople.

Roman Catholic AnswerThe actual "hierarchy" of the Church is comprised of Bishops, Priests, and Deacons. If you put the Pope on top, and the lay people on the bottom, you come up with five. You could also count Pope, Cardinals, Archbishops, Bishops, and Priests, and come up with five. Or the current ordained ministries are Bishops, Priests, Deacons, Acolytes, and Lectors, which is also five. I don't know which one you are counting.

Why do you think the Christian church came to be ruled by a hierarchy?

The hierarchical structure in the Christian church can be traced back to the early days of Christianity, where leadership roles were established to maintain order and guide the community. Over time, the church developed a structured hierarchy to oversee various aspects of its operations, such as doctrine, governance, and pastoral care. This hierarchical system helped ensure unity, continuity, and organizational stability within the church.
