Trenches, Schlieffen Plan, they had allies, gas, machine guns, America's late intervention and trenches again really :P and it wasn't quite the world... The Schlieffen Plan was a plan to take over France by capturing Paris in a ridiculously short time while still being safe from Russia. Their fast advances into Belgium and France and their overwhelming power (Germany had a much bigger army than France, and they sent most of their men there as they thought it would take a while for Russia to mobilize and attack from the East). This coupled with Britain's inability to send their army over to help their allies quickly allowed Germany to claim a lot of French soil. When the Britains mobilized along with the French army in coordinated attacks, the Germans were forced to retreat slightly. The battle soon became a stalemate and in the muddy battlefield the armies dug a series of trenches into the ground. The Germans dug trenches too, even some very deep trenches. This made them safe from rifle fire, machine gun fire, shells (for the most part). Stay in said trench and you're untouchable...for a while. Two key weapons were developed by the Germans, the machine gun and gas. The machine gun gunnned down any advancing men and halted the Allied Forces advances. Gas was also developed to smoke out the Allies in their trenches or to use as a cover for them to ambush. America chose to stay neutral for the majority of the war, although having supplied weapons to the Allies. However, after MANY MANY MANY U-boat attacks and the German ambassador of America telling the Mexicans to start a war with America and to join them forced America to intervene. This served as a large boost for the Allies and brought despair to the Germans. As much as 10,000 soldiers were coming from America a day.
