By laying waste to the rich farmland of Georgia (by Sherman) and the Shenandoah Valley (by Sheridan), they could help to starve enemy soldiers and civilians alike, and ruin their morale.
Sherman had reckoned that this would bring victory quicker than by pursuing the enemy through the mountains, as originally ordered by Grant.
