Houses were mostly made out of steel and concrete, though some synthetic materials were often employed on roofing tiles.

Out west in the 1800s, homes were made of whatever was available. In the prairies, the homes were built of sod. In Kentucky/Tennessee and other forested areas, cabins were built of notched logs. Out west, adobe bricks were made and then used with lime and mortar to build homes.
