It's not clear that Lennon particularly liked skiffle music, but skiffle music was quite easy to play and could be played with cheap instruments - a typical skiffle band was guitar, soapbox bass (made from a wooden box, a broom handle and some string) and a washboard. Because it was so cheap, many skiffle groups started up in the late 1950s. Lennon's band was one of these.
Like many teenagers in the late 1950s, they were inspired by Elvis Presley and Buddy Holly and by the Scottish singer Lonnie Donegan who introduced skiffle music to the UK. Skiffle could be played with largely home made instruments; washboard, tea-chest bass and guitar and thousands of bands started up.
