It's not clear that Lennon particularly liked skiffle music, but skiffle music was quite easy to play and could be played with cheap instruments - a typical skiffle band was guitar, soapbox bass (made from a wooden box, a broom handle and some string) and a washboard. Because it was so cheap, many skiffle groups started up in the late 1950s. Lennon's band was one of these.

Why did John Lennon form the Quarry Men?

There was a craze in Britain in the late 1950s, called "skiffle"; amateurs played folk music on homemade instruments, or whatever they could get. Lennon and his friend Peter Shotton started such a group, and named it after their high school (Quarry Bank Grammar School), hoping to get to play at school events. Lennon and another boy played guitar, Shotton played washboard (stroking it for an elementary rhythm), and other friends played banjo, tea-chest bass, and drums. Paul McCartney joined that group the next year, and George Harrison followed later. When skiffle died out, they changed to playing rock-n-roll.
