There was a craze in Britain in the late 1950s, called "skiffle"; amateurs played Folk Music on homemade instruments, or whatever they could get. Lennon and his friend Peter Shotton started such a group, and named it after their high school (Quarry Bank Grammar School), hoping to get to play at school events. Lennon and another boy played guitar, Shotton played washboard (stroking it for an elementary rhythm), and other friends played banjo, tea-chest bass, and drums. Paul McCartney joined that group the next year, and George Harrison followed later. When skiffle died out, they changed to playing rock-n-roll.
