First of all keep in mind that ancient Roman society was not the same as ours. Men and women had their special roles or "jobs" according to their class. Now all Roman women had as their primary job, taking care of the children, house and most important to promote her husband's interests. This may seem sexist by today's standards, but in the ancient world it was the norm and the women played their given role. A wealthy woman, of course would have slaves to help in the house and with the children, but she was ultimately responsible for them. She would also have to promote her husband's interests, by doing favors for the right people, tipping him off on anything that might pertain to his career, (she got this information by socializing with other wives) and helping to contract a marriage that would give the family upward mobility. A middle classed woman had much of the same duties. A poorer woman was, in addition to the above basics, expected to help her husband in his line of work in some way or to aid the family's finances by doing some specialized work that she may have a talent for such as embroidery, beading, or even accounting work. Lower social classes often worked as slaves or farmers, middle class were usually shopkeepers. While upper class were senators. This is just a brief outline, Have fun now!!
