Technology was a large factor here, seeing as a Spanish musket or even the sword was far superior to a Mayan spear and the fact that the Spanish wore full armor compared to simple shields.

Another was knowledge and the Aztec religion. When the Conquistadors landed in Mexico the Aztecs had never actually seen a horse and there was a belief that the Spanish were actually gods due to their half-human half-animal appearance. Men were not very likely to stand in defense against an "angered god".

Also, the Conquistadors were able to make allies of the tribes that were oppressed by the Aztecs.

the spanish conquest of the Americas was contributed to by the king of Spain wanting to have as much gold as poosible.
