Living conditions after the end of the war were really hard. Food was still rationed, clothes were hard to find, and very expensive to buy. Wages were controlled and so were many types of employment. Housing was in short supply due to the amount of buildings that had been bombed out or burned. Many city blocks were nothing but rubble fields. Everything was old, broken, patched up with no hope of anything new being bought to replace it, as the factories were still being converted back to making consumer goods again. With the return of former servicemen, many women lost their jobs, and had to try to get by on much less income. Many of those former servicemen wanted to emmigrate to places where they had served, such as Canada, Australia, or the USA. In the ten years from 1948 to 1958 over three milion people left the U.K. to go somewhere else, to try to start a new life.

Before World War I there was very little combined housing, very few apartment style housing units, and a majority of the housing was private or single family residence. Much of the population lived outside of cities in farmhouses.
