The Cold war (both short term and long term). The polarization of the world between the two sides also led to the Korean crisis, the Berlin airlift, the uprisings in both Hungary and Czechoslovakia. The Marshall plan was also a short term affect upon the world that reaped long term benefits, as the US helped to rebuild the world. Also there were power vacuums created by the WWII. Both Britain and France began to lose their colonial possessions. This meant freedom to lots of differing countries

There different long term effects that Islamic Fundamentalism had in most parts of the world. This included governments, education and world view among others.
In the later part of the 19th century British dominance in the world would in the long term become one its disadvantages. One long term problem would be the fact that Britain was contributing to the long term expansion of its rival nations. Britain's investment in its colonial empire by establishing and developing foreign industries and agriculture, with repeated injections and by building harbors, railways and steamships would in time, lead to overseas producers to rival their own. British innovations in production and inventions, for example would help the US, Russia and Central powers increase their power. By leading the world, copycat innovations by its rivals would increase the power of those nations. This was especially true with Russia and the Central powers of Europe. What English 19th century industrialization did was to give away advantages to nations that were trailing Britain. It can also be debated that Britain's financial powers, and sophistication made itself highly dependent upon international trade. Long term, this too would become a handicap as other nations once again would copy the financial expertise of the UK. All this was, however, speaking about a very long term situation. By comparison, the larger and more powerful the British empire became, it can be argued that it became another Roman empire. This included having to use more resources to protect its position.
The war in Europe ended in May 1945. The reason the Germans were defeated was because the military might of the US, Russia & Britain was, in the long term, greater than they could oppose.
