The three main disputes were the initial colonial movement for independence, the efforts of the US to maintain that independence and ultimately disagreements over the boundaries between the United States and Canada (which was a British colony and dominion for much of the past three hundred years). Obviously the Revolutionary War was fought to separate the United States from Britain. The War of 1812 was fundamentally about the ability of the US to function as a separate nation rather than being pulled back into the British orbit. As late as the American Civil War, the British were trying to leverage a relationship with the southern states into a stronger position in North America. Finally, the US and Britain have had disputes over Canada. In 1775, a continental army invaded Quebec with disastrous results. Through the first half of the 19th century the US and Britain quarreled over the northern boundary of the US--most colorfully involving the slogan "Fifty four forty or fight".
