There was a threat of South Vietnam becoming communist .. and we of all countries did not want this to happen... it was known as the "domino effect" (named by President Eisenhower). This means that if one country falls to communism, they all will. What basically started all of the war was when a U.S. ship entered the Gulf of Tonkin. Northern Vietnam felt in danger because of our presence, so they fired at us. We had a reason to fire back so we did.

After the Vietnamese drove the French out of Vietnam and the US handed it back to them after WW2, Ho Chi Minh tried to get the French to stay out, but they wouldn't. THis led to a Geneva Convention in which Vietnam was to be split in two [North (Communist) and South (Democratic) Vietnam] for a period of time in which Vietnamese could choose which state they wanted to live in. At the end of this time there would be an election and the Country would turn either fully Communist or Democratic. The Americans however boycotted this for fear of spread of Communism and the second Vietnamese War was started.

The main problem between North and South Vietnam was the agreement between both parties that South Vietnam should have elections shortly after the forming of the country. No elections were ever held in South Vietnam, if they had been, the country would have been unified much earlier without the many thousands of deaths caused by the war.

Prior to 1954, there was no North and South Vietnam. It was a single unified country called Vietnam. Unfortunately, it had been under foreign control since 1858 when the French invaded and remained to occupy. Prior to World War 2, Japan invaded Vietnam and forced the French to leave. The American allies promised Vietnam that if they aided the allies against the Japanese, they would be awarded with independence after the war. Although they did provide the aid, unfortunately, the French were allowed to return after the war and assume control. Then in 1946, Vietnam reverted to conventional and guerrilla fighting until the French were finally defeated in 1954. This action was known as The First Indochina War and ended with the signing of a peace treaty in 1954. Unfortunately, Vietnam still could not gain their independence even though the French were not allowed to return. Instead, Vietnam was split into two countries; North Vietnam under communist control and South Vietnam under democratic control. In spite of this settlement, North Vietnam still wanted a single independent Vietnam under communist control. That is why that in 1955, the North Vietnamese began using their regular army to conduct conventional attacks and their Viet Cong allies to conduct guerrilla attacks against South Vietnam. That is how the Vietnam War began.

The Cold War and the fear that it would spread were the main events that led up to the conflict in the Vietnam War. The war in Vietnam lasted roughly 10 years.
