Main ideas behind renaissance?

What I've read is that the main idea behind the renaissance is it was a re-birth of how literature, arts, ect. were viewed/learned. This isn't the best answer but then again I didn't get the most informative information :) What I have read is that the main idea behind the whole renaissance thing is that the rulers and such wanted to improve how knowledge [arts, literature, economics, ect.] was. It was the re-birth of those things. It's not the best answer but it's the best I found and can give..sorry :)
