The main reason for Roman supremacy was their army. Period. They were a warlike, determined people and when they set their sights on something they got it. They may have lost battles, but they always came back and pounded the enemy until they won the war. A secondary reason for their supremacy was their rule of law which was uniform throughout the empire. A third reason was their infrastructure-- roads, bridges, aqueducts, public buildings--all of which brought civilization to the frontiers and a standard of living that some of the conquered peoples had never known.
