Generally the condition that people lived in, especially in the larger cities was gross. Poor sanitation (human waste in streets) was found in streets However, two discoveries in medicine were made in the nineteenth century - anaesthesia and the antiseptic method of surgery. Being able to put patients into sleep conditions enabled surgeons to remove or repair body parts. The antiseptics gave patients a slightly better chance of surviving the surgery.
