Poor sanitation (human waste in streets) was found in streets However, two discoveries in medicine were made in the nineteenth century - anaesthesia and the antiseptic method of surgery. Being able to put patients into sleep conditions enabled surgeons to remove or repair body parts. The antiseptics gave patients a slightly better chance of surviving the surgery.
