The Battle of Stalingrad was the bloodiest battle in human history. And the Russian civilians were ordered to attack the Germans with anything they had (lots with bricks from fallen buildings). The battle was pretty much basic, charge the Germans with anything you had. Sadly this resulted in a tremendous 2 million deaths.

The German Sixth Army , once surrounded and cut off from most supplies , had to suffer from being inadequately clothed for one of the harshest Winters in Russia , food was given only to those who were capable of fighting , wounded went without bandages and morphine , they were trapped and in fear of being captured and tortured by the Russians . Out of approximately 330,000 who went into Russian captivity only 5008 ever returned home : the Sixth Army had been annihilated .
