When Crispin the martyr died, the official canonization process was not in place. That did not come about until a thousand years later. Miracles were not required at the time to prove sainthood. Dying as a martyr was all that was required for a person to be declared a saint.
Saint Crispin is said to have performed miracles such as healing the sick, converting people to Christianity, and even being protected from harm when he was thrown into a river with a heavy stone tied around his neck. These miracles are part of his legend and are celebrated as acts of divine intervention.
The first Saint Crispin and his twin brother Crispinian were, according to the early martyrology, from a noble family but chose to be cobblers because this would allow them to convert people to Christianity. In time, they were discovered and in around 285 CE, the emperor himself ordered the prefect Rictiovarus to punish them. In the circumstances, it is not surprising that the martyrology goes on to describe the tortures Crispin and Crispinian endured, but it is surprising that rather than then crucifying or executing them by some other cruel and publicly humiliating means, Rictiovarus had them thrown into molten lead. This should have resulted in a quick and relatively painless death, but instead the brothers sat quietly in the cauldron without any signs of suffering, and with loud voices praised God. Rictiovarus then ordered them to be thrown into a raging fire, but they were again unscathed. Not even thinking to have the brothers killed by the sword, Rictiovarus in frustration threw himself into the fire. Emperor Maximian then sent orders for them to be beheaded. Such is the stuff of myth and legend.
