The Western portion of Germany, called the Federal Republic of Germany was backed by the Western Allies, while the Soviet Union backed East Germany, the German Democratic Republic. In 1989, when the communist government of the GDR lost backing from Soviet troops, their government fell and Germany reunified in 1990.
