Meat from hunting local wildlife, birds and fowl as well as fruits, vegetables and grains. meats were dried, salted and otherwise preserved. Some vegetables could be dried or pickled or fermented to prevent their spoiling over time. There were no canned goods or refrigerators so most other foods had to be fresh if they could not be preserved.
