There were several primary reasons for Spain to colonize the Americas. The first reason was to expand their empire and import goods from the Americas. The second reason was to spread the word of God and attempt to convert the natives to Catholicism. Thirdly, the wealth in gold and silver shipped back to Spain helped it to expand its power and influence in the world.

Spain was among the first European powers to make a significant effort to colonize territories in the New World. Their explorers and conquistadors made expeditions in both North & South America. Their goal, as was the goal of other Europeans was to gain wealth and power among their peer nations. Spain was particularly successful in stealing or mining for precious metals especially gold. They as an aside tried to convert Native Americans to Catholicism.
