Sir William Howe was an English General who was commander and chief of British forces during the American Revolutionary War. General Howe was blamed for Britain's failure to win a quick victory over the American Rebels. America's victory to independence changed to course of history. Through a victory the battle influenced Howe and crushed his belief that the rebels represent a small part of the American people. Burgoyne proposed a plan for defeating the Americans he had to lead an army south while the second column advances east. This plan was to be advanced by Howe. Instead the plan was approved by Colonial Secretary Lord George Germaine. Howe's role was never clearly defined, and was never issued orders from London to aide Burgoyne. Burgoyne was left on his own, and was defeated in the critical battle of Saratoga. Howe launched his own campaign to capture the American capitol at Philadelphia. In my opinion I do not think it was Howe's fault because it was Burgoyne's plan, and he was the one leading the British to this battle. Although, the plan was never advanced by Howe instead it was approved by Lord Germaine so I think Lord Germaine should hold some of the responsibility for the defeat. Under severe criticism in England for losing to the Americans the king no longer had confidence in Howe. Howe requested to be relieved. Howe received word his resignation had been approved

It was the British government that did not want to negotiate, and after some frustration on both sides, the General and his troops attacked the colonists, attempting to put down the rebellion before it spread. Given those circumstances, I'd want to ask him whether he really approved of the war. Yes, he fought hard and some historians say he was very close to winning the war for England; but at other times, he acted as if an aggressive and brutal military campaign was not his first choice and he did not want a lot of American casualties. A case could be made that he would have preferred diplomacy, and resorted to military action as a last resort. I would also ask him how he felt about King George. Some sources say the king was mentally unbalanced. What was General Howe's impression of the king? These are just a few of the questions that could be asked, and I am sure a look at General Howe's life would give you ideas for other questions.

Boston town was just across the Back Bay from Charles Town, behind which and within sight of Boston rose Breed's and Bunker Hills. Gage had been in America for years, and was married to an American woman, who may have been a spy for the Patriots. Someone very close to Gage was, at any rate, and speculation on the identity of this person had always centered around her. These included "Gentleman Johnny" Burgoyne, who would return to England after the Battle, then back to Canada in 1777 to lead the expedition which ended in capture and disaster at Saratoga; Sir William Howe, brother of "Black Dick" (they were illegitimate cousins of the King) who would command in North America from late 1775 through 1778, while his brother commanded the Royal Navy in North American waters; and Henry Clinton, who would be the last British commander in America, from 1778 to the end. General William Howe was selected by Gage to lead the force across the Back Bay and dislodge the saucy rebels from the works they had built on the heights. He had for subordinates Brigadier General Robert Pigot, and Major Pitcairn of the Royal Marines (who had been along for every step of the expedition to Lexington and Concord on April 19, but would be killed this day in the third and final, successful assault).
