The Moorish Empire in Spain had been in decline for almost 300 years before its final fall. Over the centuries, its size already had declined from two-thirds of Spain to - in the end - only the city of Granada and the area around it. Its days of winning big battles against the Christian Kingdoms of Spain were long gone, and one by one the Moorish cities were conquered by the various Christian Kings. Moorish rulers increasingly became weak and pleasure-seeking and tried to hang on to what they had by negotiation, buying-off or even cooperation with their Christian enemies.

The Spanish helped themselves. Prior to the expulsion of the Moors in 1492 Spain was a series of independent Christian and Moorish political entities. The marriage of Isabel I of Leon and Castile to Ferdinand II of Aragon and Leon united the two largest kingdoms in Spain. Then when they finally expelled the Moors in 1492 they were pretty much the most powerful entity in Spain and the lessor kingdoms fell under their dominion.
Isabella married Ferdinand
Spain began as an independent country in 1492 when all the Christian Kingdoms finally defeated the Moors. The 3 largest kingdoms were co-ruled by Isabel I, Queen of the Kingdoms of Castile and Leon, and Ferdinand II, King of Aragon. Gradually they exerted their influence over the rest of the smaller kingdoms and Spain slowly emerged.

"Spain" did not exist as a political entity at the time of Coumbus' explorations. His explorations were financed by King Ferdinand of Navarre and isabella Queen of two kingdoms; the Kingdom Castile and the Kingdom of Leon. Neither monarch ever relinquished their sovreignty to the other even though they ruled together. The three kingdoms were first united when the grandson of Isabella and Ferdinand inheirited all three kingdoms in 1516. The three kingdoms formed the core of what became Spain. The grandson ruled as Phillip I. They gave him money and ships.
