The two sides of the revolution were the colonists and the British.

The colonists (the Americans) revolted against the British because of, essentially, rising taxes and regulations, which they saw as impeding on their rights as freeborn British. For the century preceding the war they had been treated extremely well and had little responsibilities to England.

The patriots were also upset by their lack of representation in Parliament.

On the other hand, England saw herself as merely suppressing the rebellions that come from time to time in a global empire.

They were also fighting to protect the various British interests in North America, as they had invested money and time in the colonies.
