In the United States, it was pretty much the way it's always been during times of war. Those that didn't have to fight were saying that we ought to "go in there and take care of business." Those that had to fight (the youth of the day) were thinking of ways of why we shouldn't be there. The views haven't changed, just the date.
All countries and all people's will have differing views on all things. For this particular question, Australia's "views" and "involvement" mirrored Americas.
