3 yearsJohn White took three years to return from England with the supply ship. He returned to check on the colonists.
John White was the leader (governor) of the Roanoke colony settled off the cost of Virginia in 1587. It used the site of a previous failed colony from 1585. His daughter gave birth to the first child born in the English colonies, Virginia Dare. However, the colony vanished while White was on an ill-fated voyage back to England to bring more colonists and supplies, leaving only traces of his daughter and the other families by the time White returned in 1590.
The English colony was called Roanoke and was located in the Virginia colony. John White was the leader/governor. The first English child was born there; Virginia Dare (White's granddaughter). Dare, along with the other colonists, disappeared in 1587 while White went back to England for more supplies. No attempts at English colonization would take place until 1607 at Jamestown.
He was the Governor of the 1587 group of colonists who traveled from England to Roanoke Island, in what is now North Carolina. The colonists arrived on July 4th and on the 18th of August Governor White's granddaughter was born to his daughter, Eleanor, and her husband, Ananias Dare. Shortly after the christening of the child, Governor White left Roanoke Island and returned to England to secure supplies for the colony. He was unable to return until 1590 when he discovered that his colony had abandoned the settlement. No definitive information as to their fate has ever been established.John White was an artist. In 1587 Sir. Walter Raleigh asked John White to return to Roanoke with another group of settler. (Just a fun fact) When supplies would run low White would return to England, leaving behind 117 colonists. White instructed the settlers carefully before leaving!! If they moved to another place they had to carve their new location on a tree nearby. If attacked they were to draw a cross! John White was planning on returning in a couple months. At that time England was preparing for war against Spain. It was 3 yrs. before he could go back. When he finally did he found the settlement quiet. No cross but a sign for attack was found. The word CROTOAN, (name of nearby land) was carved on a tree. He wanted to investigate but his crew refused because a storm was brewing up. So he stayed on board the captain of the ship the next day set sail back for England. And to this day the death of the Roanoke's settlers remains a mystery. Hope this helps(:John White was an artist. About 20 years passed between the disappearance of the settlers on Roanoke Island in 1587 and England's willingness to try again to establish a colony, which led to the founding of Jamestown in 1607.

The third of three voyages known as the Roanoke Voyages. The colonists left England in 1587 and arrived on Roanoke Island, in what is now North Carolina, in July of that year. In August their governor, John White, returned to England to secure more supplies. His departure marks the last verifiable information about the colony. He returned in 1590 and found no trace of his colony.
