The Puritans did organize their New England towns and villages according to the religious beliefs. They were arranged this way because the Church of England was as a result of the political struggles.
Most of the New England colonies, such as MA, stived to become "the city upon a hill" by providing equal opportunity for rich and poor, so the land for cities were divided in blocks, and much more proportionate, as compared to Chesapeake colonies, where lots of land are much more 'loose' and unequal in size.
