There were several rights guaranteed or protected by the Bill of Rights. Each of the ten amendments guaranteed one or more rights.
Many are misinterpreted because people think that they need interpretation. However, if you read the Bill of Rights and do not "interpret" it, you find the basic rights that are protected.
One of the most often misrepresented: The Establishment clause of the First Amendment. There are two parts of it: Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof
The first part simply says that Congress cannot create laws tell you that you must worship or how to worship. The second part says that they cannot create any laws that prohibit free exercise of religion. Combine the two and Congress can create no laws about religion whatsoever.
Considering that Congress is the only body in the federal government that can create laws, this means that the federal government has no say whatsoever with regards to religion. The federal government has no jurisdiction of any kind on matters of religion. Therefore any restrictions put forth by Congress to date are unconstitutional. Any rulings made by the Supreme Court with regards to religion are unconstitutional. Any mandates made by the president with regards to religion are unconstitutional. States can Constitutionally make any laws that they see fit with regards to religion as the First Amendment only restricts the federal government.
