Runes were a written alphabet alphabet used by the Vikings, consisting of various symbols that could be efficiently carved into stone or wood, due to the many straight lines and no curved lines.
Vikings & other germanic peoples
Runes were used as an alphabet by the Norse (Vikings), the old Germanic tribes of Northern Europe, and the Anglo-Saxons of Britain. They also had magic uses, such as divination, and protective magic.
Runes had been in existence for nealy a thousand years before the Vikings. They originated with the Germanic tribes of Northern Europe.
The Norse (Vikings), the old Germanic tribes of Northern Europe, and the Anglo-Saxons of Britain all used the runes as their alphabet. They also used runes for magical purposes, such as divination.
First off, the runes were used as a writing language for the vikings back in the Dark Ages. However, they were also a way of divination for them, quite like Tarot cards, except they were rocks.
Runes are the Viking alphabet. A rune is a symbol that stands for a sound. The runic alphabet was called the Futhark, and there were various versions of it. The original Elder Futhark had 24 runes. In Iceland, it was reduced down to 16-18, while the anglo-saxons expanded it up to 32 runes. A google search of "Futhark" will show what they looked like. The Futhark was called "Futhark" because of the first six runes. Fehu, Uruz, Thurisaz, Ansuz, Raido, Kenaz. F-U-Th-A-R-K, just as the roman "alphabet" is called that because of the first two letters. Alpha-Beta.

The vikings in Iceland wrote in Icelandic or old norse. For example Snorri Sturluson Icelander that wrote Heimskringla among other works. Vikings wrote using characters called runes which were phonetic. Where our characters are called alphabetical (after alpha and beta, the first two characters in Greek) theirs is called the futhark after the first six characters (th being a single character). There is a link below.
Vikings lived in Scandanava which now is somewhere in Europe. I think Greenland. The tempertures were horrible and cold. They would make buildings and stuff.

The vikings wrote with the Futhark. Its a character row that was designed to be carved into wood or stone. They didn't have parchment or paper, so books and whatnot were nearly impossible. Stories and other knowledge was passed down verbally. However, there are MANY examples of rune carved monuments, as well wooden stakes and tablets with quick short messages. Many of them were used by traders to identify goods. The runes were also believed to be magical, and is the basis of one of the two viking age style of magic, called galdr.
Mostly Fire runes but Law runes and Air runes are not far behind them.
