Generally there were two broad definitions:
Patrician and Plebeian
Patricians came from 'old' families, although that did not necessarily make them rich. Most of the senators (especially in the early Republic) would have been patricians.
Plebeians were those whose ancestors had not achieved greatness (such as a consulship) - but they could be quite wealthy and rise to power (this was seen quite often in the Late Republic, with men such as Cicero and Marius).
The richest people in Roman times were those who had the most money. (Just as today) It's an error to think that the patricians were the wealthy people, as this was not always the case. Caesar and Sulla, were both patricians but they were impoverished. Wealth and riches depended upon a man's hard work, inheritance, business deals, etc., not upon a man's social class.
The poor people in roman society were known collectively as the Plebians. The rich were known as the Patricians.

The Romans did not have closets as we have, they stored their clothing in trunks or chests. The wealthy had a slave called a Vestisplica, who was in charge of folding, storing and maintaining the wardrobe.
