The main reason William the Conqueror built castles in England was so that he could control rebellions, keep his people safe, and for places to live in. Also, he built them as bases for tax collection.

He didn't reward the English. However he did start a revolution. He introduced new things like the Domesday Book, Castles and the Feudal System.
When he felt like it...
Motte and Bailey castles were built in the 11th century just after the Battle of Hastings in 1066. They were built by King William I (William the Conqueror) who was the new King of England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland. He built the Motte and Bailey castles all over Britain because all the people didn't like him and wouldn't obay him. Having castles all dotted around the Contories made sure that people did what they were told and make sure that there were no rebellions. If people didn't do what they were told, his knights would kill them or arrest them.
Stone or square keep castles were first built in Medieval England by William the Conqueror. Stone keep castles were the natural extension of motte and bailey castles. Motte and bailey castles were only temporary features (though many mottes exist to this day) while stone keep castles were built to last. William the Conqueror took over Britain following the Battle of Hastings in 1066 AD. He was a thin, fair skinned man with brunette hair and a long goatee.
Castle design changed because William the Conqueror first wanted stone castles and they were built. Then came along Edward I and he wanted concentric castles. it started with a motte and bailey castleCastles have a changed a lot since medieval times. It used to be Motte and Bailey castles built from wood but then William the conqueror started building castles from stone. They used stone because it was:StrongCouldn't burnCant be knocked overGood Protection
Motte and Bailey castles could have been located all over France and Britain but now you can't because th ey have all rotted down or have been replaced by Stone Keep castles (Stone Castles). These Motte and Bailey castles were built by King William I (William the Conqueror) in the 11th century. BANANAMAN123(NAME OF USER) EDITED FROM HER ON:::They were built by William in Britain after he took over England in 1066 at the Battle of Hastings. they were built to scare the englishmen and to defend him. EG. William also put these in to keep the citizens in order, for example, lets say a guy named jack did crimes... he wouldn't any more because the castles had guards in and he would be arrested if he did .PLEASE LIKE:)
