The great naval hero, John Paul Jones.
"I have not yet begun to fight". Captain John Paul Jones said this during the famous battle between Bonhomme Richard and Serapis on 23 September 1779. It seems that some of Jones's men cried for surrender, but not John Paul Jones! Captain Richard Pearson of Serapis asked Jones if he had surrendered. Jones uttered the immortal words: "I have not yet begun to fight!" So, at least, Lt. Richard Dale later recalled.
John Paul Jones famous ship the Bonhomme Richard was lost during the Battle of Flamborough Head, the battle in which Jones defeated the HMS Serapis.Once it was apparent the battle was lost, the Serapis' Captain Richard Pearson surrendered his vessel to Jones. Jones transferred his flag and crew to the Serapis and took command from there. At that point, the Bonhomme Richard was sinking; efforts to save the ship overnight by pumping and repairs proved fruitless. Jones ordered all supplies and wounded off of the ship, and the Richard sank the next day.
The most famous US naval captain during the Revolutionary War was John Paul Jones. From 1777 to 1779, Jones commanded the USS Ranger. With the Ranger, Jones attacked and harassed British merchant shipping. These attacks were responsible for tying up logistics and allocation of defense resources. Also these attacks of the USS Ranger significantly decreased British morale. Many British at the time thought the American Revolution was a distant foreign affair, but Jones' attacks brought the conflict to the British's own doorstep. In 1779, Jones took command of his most famous ship, the USS Bonhomme Richard. In September 1779, the Bonhomme Richard famously engaged the HMS Serapis in the Battle of Flamborough Head. The battle was intense, and for a moment, the British seemed to be winning. When the British captain asked if Jones was ready to strike his colors and surrender, Jones gave his famous reply "I have not yet begun to fight!" The Americans won, and the battle became one of the most celebrated victories of the American Revolution.
On September 23, 1779 one of the fiercest battles of the Revolutionary War took place off the coast of Flamborough Head, England between Bonhomme Richard and H.M.S. Serapis. Bonhomme Richard was captained by John Paul Jones who is often considered the father of the United States Navy. The battle between the two ships took place at point-blank range and lasted almost three and a half hours. John Paul Jones emerged from the battle victorious and captured Serapis as his prize. Thirty-six hours after taking command of Serapis, John Paul Jones watched his beloved Bonhomme Richard sink into the North Sea. It was during this battle that John Paul Jones' legendary words, "I have not yet begun to fight!" were recorded in American history.
