John Adams' presidency has been widely criticized due to a tense foreign crisis with the French, which he did not create, as well as the passage of the Alien and Sedition acts. However, his ability to at least attempt to negotiate with the French when everyone in his political party was against it, required a certain strength of character. He was intelligent, capable and aristocratic with natural leadership skills. He became part of the first presidential dynasty when his son John Quincy Adams became president in 1824.
